What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder in which people struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep or both. You may have insomnia if you regularly find it hard to fall asleep, wake up several times in the night, wake up early, feel unrefreshed after waking up, find it difficult to nap, feel irritable, lethargic, unmotivated, struggle with mood swings, or find it difficult to concentrate on tasks due to fatigue.
Doctors usually make a clinical diagnosis of insomnia if a patient suffers with difficulty sleeping for at least three nights a week for a minimum of three months and if these issues sleeping cause major distress to a person’s life. There are two types of insomnia, chronic and short-term or acute.
What causes insomnia?
If you have insomnia, the cause of your condition will depend on the type of sleeplessness you experience.

- Psychological conditions, such as anxiety or depression
- Medical conditions that cause movement, such as restless leg syndrome
- Substance use
- Sleep apnoea
- Diabetes
Who is more at risk of insomnia?

- Lower-income
- Travelling to different time zones

How does hypnotherapy for insomnia work?
At Focused Hypnosis, we will partner you with a qualified hypnotherapist, who will use guided relaxation methods, such as positive verbal repetitions and mental images, to help you successfully achieve hypnosis.
Once you reach a state of total relaxation, your hypnotherapist will help you discover what triggers your insomnia and disrupts your sleep. Then, we will work with you to help you think more positively about your worries, help you relax, and teach you sleep-inducing techniques.
What are the benefits of treating insomnia with hypnotherapy?
- Hypnotherapy offers you the tools to achieve a state of total relaxation, which will make it easier for you to fall asleep
- Unlike many other forms of psychological treatment, you have the power when under hypnosis, as you can control the methods that your hypnotherapist will use, and you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state whenever you want to
- Hypnotherapy is all-natural and has little side-effects or complications
- You cannot become reliant on hypnotherapy, unlike sleep-inducing medications. Hypnotherapy is cost-effective and a cheaper option for psychological treatment, as it only requires around six sessions
- Hypnotherapy teaches you self-sufficient methods that can be practised when you are struggling to sleep

I now sleep better, can walk into a pub on my own AND I am reflecting on a morning of scrambling and jumping off rocks coasteering around the Cornish Coastline"

What to expect from an insomnia hypnotherapy session?
During your first insomnia hypnotherapy session, your hypnotherapist will begin by explaining how hypnosis works. After that, you’ll have a conversation to establish why you want to cure your insomnia and agree on the methods that your hypnotherapist will use.
Then, the hypnotherapist may:
- Use guided relaxation techniques to lull you into a deeply relaxed state of mind and body
- Use your agreed method to help you achieve your goal. For example, teaching you to associate sleep with positive outcomes;
- To conclude the session, your hypnotherapist will gradually bring you out of your trance-like state
Will hypnotherapy help me get a better night's sleep?
Hypnosis can be an effective, efficient, and accessible form of treatment for insomnia. However, hypnosis is not the right form of treatment for everyone, as if you are not open to hypnosis, you will not be able to be hypnotised. Also, hypnosis is not suitable for you if you have a serious mental disorder, such as schizophrenia, to create false memories.
What else can I do to improve sleep?
- Increasing light exposure throughout the day or spending more time outside
- Reduce blue light exposure in the evening, such as watching television or going on your mobile phone
- Do not consume caffeine late in the day
- Do not eat late in the evening
- Do not take daytime naps
- Exercise regularly, but not before bed
- Try to have a consistent sleeping pattern
- Consider using a sleeping supplement, such as lavender
- Do not drink alcohol or participate in substance abuse
- Create a comfortable sleeping environment
